Waqeea Chaudhry
I am a Pakistani artist living in Sydney and working mainly in oils. I paint landscapes and still life, hovering in a space between the macro and the micro. I have travelled and lived for several years in Europe, the Middle East and Pakistan so the influences in my work are varied and diverse.
I am an avid collector of art myself and started my artistic journey painting intricate compositions on porcelain in Geneva, Switzerland. As my perspective shifted to painting larger compositions on flat surfaces, my eye learned to travel from the minute details I once focused on to encapsulating the ‘bigger picture’. I am inspired by everyday beauty in my environment and fascinated by the transformative power of light on form, colour as well as my own internal mood. It is through my study of shifting light that I seek to connect with the viewer.
Spending time at my easel is a joyous, meditative exercise. I love to experiment with new materials and ideas. One of my most exciting discoveries has been cold wax and the plethora of avenues it opens up for creating new work.
I am a member and regular exhibitor in exhibitions held by the Kuring Gai Art Society. Last year, I was also inducted into the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. I was a finalist in the Hornsby Art Prize and Hunter’s Hill Art Prize in 2022. My work has been exhibited in a Combined Art Societies exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum of Sydney and in exhibitions in rural Yarramalong.
